#NOTABILITY APP FOR IPAD 2 FREE#
Overall, I’ve had both since I got my first iPad nearly eight years ago (bought GN then caught Notability’s free promo a few month later), and I’ve used Notability almost exclusively.

GN produces smaller files, Notability tends to inflate PDF sizes by 20-30%. There’s a couple of workarounds but it’s a PITA (either import a landscape PDF and copy it to new notes, or rotate the iPad and lock rotation but then no handwriting recognition). Notability doesn’t have landscape templates. You can have landscape and portrait templates. Basically, in GN you have to manually drill down folder structure to see what notes you have in each folder. GN has multiple levels (indefinite ?) but no master list of all notes. The best alternative is Microsoft OneNote, which is free. There are more than 25 alternatives to Notability for a variety of platforms, including iPad, iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows. Notability has a master list of all notes, as well as a two-deep folder (category, whatever you want to call it) organizing structure for notes. Notability is described as Documentation and Note taking tool and is a popular Note-taking tool in the office & productivity category. So Notability can also be used as a data manager. The biggest difference is that it supports all kinds of hyperlinks - web, phone, email, map addresses, links to other apps. GN has no voice recording.Ī far better typed text feature. A great feature for meetings or lectures. Voice recording synchronized to handwriting so you can always hear what was said when you wrote something. You can link your dropbox, google drive accounts to backup all notes in PDF format that becomes very handy when you want to draw some stuff and open in your computer very quickly. For me, Notability wins by a wide margin. I like Notability app because it’s very simple and plain app with few extra features that I like. I started this back-transformation with using more and more moleskines than taking notes on my phone. Even including the requirement of typing our ideas or words on a keyboard being a restriction to our mind. Sometimes we udnerestimate the value of not having boundaries when we think. I love the output feels truely non-techy creation but it is in fact a digital creation. My use cases are still a lot of ideation, super low fidelity wireframing, some planning work. Notability is the one app that I’m feeling very comfortable to draw and create stuff with it. Unfortunately I’m still seeing many of the drawing and note taking apps are having the lag it had from 60 refresh rate old screen.

With the software support and not being paranoid about hand touching screen while writing or drawing, it definitely gets very close to the real thing.

With the latest iPad Pro 10” version, with screen refresh rate going much faster, now you can definitely feel it’s very very close. There is only one thing you’re looking at a pencil, and that is the feeling has to be real because you’re dragging a pointer on a virtual paper. The first release wasn’t necessarily laggy but you can definitely feel it’s tech side of it. But I can totally understand it’s value from the educational standpoint – not art (at least not yet). In fact, the two apps own the number one and two spots. And I’ve used Apple Pencil from it’s first debut but wasn’t convinced and also rejected the new gadget because it wasn’t Steve Jobs way. iCloud Usage Policy (TechRepublic Premium) Notability and GoodNotes 5 are two of the leading note-taking applications in the Apple App Store.

I owned pretty much all iPad models and versions from the very first release (I got a limited edition back then).

The reason that styluses weren’t compelling is because they were laggy and never felt great to draw on screen.Įven with Apple pencil, it is still not great.

Closest thing was Wacom’s Cintiq and that was a giant monitor. I was very skeptical about styluses for many years, especially over a screen.
